What is World Braille day?

World Braille day is celebrated annually on January 4th because it is Louis Braille's Birthday. He is inventor of Braille. Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809 in the town of Coupvray near Paris, France. The day recognizes the contribution of Louis Braille in helping blind and visually impaired people to read and write.

Who was Louis Braille?

Braille was himself blinded at the age of three in an accident that occurred while he was playing with tools in his father's harness shop. A tool is slipped and plunged into his eye. With the help of his father and local priest he was accepted at National Institute for Blind children in Paris, the World's first school for the blind. When Louis was only 15 years old, he created a reading and writing system for people with blindness based on Charles Barbier's night writing system. Braille named after its inventor in 19th century, France.

What is Braille?

Braille is a system of reading and writing for persons in which raised dots represent the letters of the alphabet. People read Braille by moving their fingertips from left to right across the lines of dots. Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols

Each Braille character or cell is made up of six dot positions arranged in a rectangle comprising 2 columns of 3 dots each. A dot may be raised at any of the 6 positions or any combination, counting the space in which no dots are raised, there are 64 such combinations. Braille books are more expensive than other college text books. Braille is not actually a language it is a system of writing.

Why World Braille day celebrated?

 French and rest of the World eventually realized what a valuable contribution, Louis Braille had made to the lives of blind person. The day for the event chosen by the United Nations General Assembly via proclamation in November 2018 for creating awareness and making people understand the importance of Braille as a means of communication. The first World Braille day was celebrated on January 4, 2019.

Louis Braille died at the age of 43 on January 6, 1852 of tuberculosis. He was a French educator and inventor of a system of reading and writing for use by the blind or visually impaired. This system remains virtually unchanged to this day and known as World wide simply as Braille. Without Braille it is very difficult for blind people to learn how to read and write. Now a days, you will find Braille on objects you use every day like signs, ATMs, elevators, calculators and more.
