Vasant Panchami 2021, Shree Panchami, Saraswati Pooja, 16th February

Vasant Panchami (also called Saraswati Puja) is a festival that marks the preparation for the arrival of spring season in India.

In Sanskrit "Vasant" means spring. "Panchami" is the fifth day of Shukla paksha, the fortnight of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Magh, (which falls in late January or February). This year Vasant Panchami falls on Tuesday, February 16, 2021.

Yellow is the dominant color of this Vasant Panchami festival as it signifies the ripening of fruits and crops.

Spring Season

According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Goddess Saraswati, who is deity of music, wisdom, art, science and the Saraswati river, was born on this auspicious day. God Brahma created Goddess Saraswati (who was born from his mouth) as the incarnation of knowledge on Vasant Panchami.

Goddess Saraswati helped God Brahma to form and finalize his creations. Saraswati created the moon, the stars and even the sun. Goddess Saraswati created Sanskrit language of Hinduism and even taught God Ganesh (the elephant headed god) to use a pen and write.

In our tradition, Goddess Saraswati married to God Brahma, however other legend claims that she was first married to God Vishnu, the preserver God of Trinity. God Vishnu had three wives at that time and decided to give Goddess Saraswati to God Brahma.

Goddess Saraswati

Goddess Saraswati is generally shown to have four arms, holding a book, a rosary, a water pot and a veena, the Hindu classical instrument. She is often depicted riding on a swan although sometimes she is accompanied by a peacock.

As per another Vasant Panchami story, God Rama ate half tested grapes of Mata Shabri on Vasant Panchami.

God Brahma is one of the three gods of Trimurti (Trinity), the one who created the universe. God Brahma is rarely actively worshipped, although God Brahma is one of the most important Hindu Gods. In our folk tales, one day God Brahma was unable to begin an important ritual on time, because Goddess Saraswati was late. God Brahma created a new wife Gayatri for that ceremony on the advice of Gods. When Goddess Saraswati eventually turned up and saw her husband God Brahma with another woman, she was devastated and angry and cursed God Brahma never to be worshipped by humanity.

She has remained significant as a Goddess from the Vedic period to modern times of Hindu traditions. She is a member of the Trinity (Tridevi) of Saraswati, Laxmi and Parvati.
