The novel (not seen previously in humans) coronavirus disease is categorized as a pandemic by WHO (World Health Organization) on March 11, 2020. Corona ( means 'crown' in Latin ) virus gets its name from the crownlike spikes that it has on its surface. It is suggested that the virus likely emerged from an animal source.

COVID-19 disease is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or exhales. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air, and quickly fall on floors or surfaces.

People with COVID-19 generally experience mild respiratory illness and fever, on an average of 5-6 days after infection (mean incubation period 5-6 days, range 1-14 days). Most people infected with COVID-19 virus have mild disease and recover. Older people, and those with pre-existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes) appear to be more vulnerable.

WHO advise, children aged 5 years and under should not be required to wear masks. This is based on the safety and overall interest of the child and the capacity to appropriate use a mask with minimal assistance. People should avoid to wear mask when exercising because it is difficult to breathe and promotes the growth of microorganisms through wet or sweaty mask.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and spreads.

Researchers worldwide are working around the clock to find a vaccine against COVID-19 pandemic. The Herculean effort means that a fast-tracked vaccine could come to market anywhere from the end of 2020 to the middle of 2021. We will have to continue to socially distance (minimum 1 meter), wear Fabric masks, avoid crowds and wash our hands and we should wait for our turn to get vaccines.
