Tulsi Vivah as the name suggests, the festival is about the marriage ceremony of Holy Plant Tulsi (Basil) and Lord Vishnu (Shaligram Form), celebrated on eleventh day of Kartik Shukla Paksha.
The Tulsi wedding (vivah) signifies the beginning of Hindu Wedding Season. According to some religious beliefs Lord Vishnu wakes up after 4 months of sleeping in Kshirsagar on this Ekadashi day, onwards all auspicious activities begin.
Thus it is known as Devotthan Ekadaashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi.
Prabodhini Ekadashi Tithi begins ; 2:42 am, Nov 25, 2020.
Prabodhini Ekadashi Tithi ends : 5:10 am, Nov 26, 2020.
According to Hindu Mythology, to demolish Jalandhar (the demon king), Lord Vishnu visited Vrinda's (Jalandhar's wife) adobe in the disguise of Jalandhar on the request of other Gods. Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into stone (Shaligram) and reside at Gandaki River when she learnt about it. Lord Vishnu blessed her with the boon of becoming his wife in the next birth (in the form of sacred Tulsi Plant) for his wrong act. It is believed that Tulsi is the incarnation of Goddess Laxmi, wife of Lord Vishnu.
As stated in one legend, She (Tulsi) was the wife of Shankchud who was killed by Lord Shiva, thereby Tulsi leaves are prohibited on a Shivling. Hence, it is considered inauspicious to pluck leaves on Sunday and Ekadashi. Folk tale states that, Tulsi Maharani keeps fasting on the whole Ekadashi and takes rest on Dwadashi.
People place a Tulsi leaf in the mouth of a dying person with a belief that, the process will lead him to Vaikunth (Lord Vishnu's place).
We are advised not to chew Tulsi leaves because it releases mercury content, when it is chewed, that can damage our teeth and cause discoloration. Tulsi is also considered as medicinal Plant.
