On January 26, 2021 i.e. today, India will celebrate its 72nd Republic day to honour the historic day when the country became an independent republic.
The Constitution of India came into effect on January
26, 1950 which affirm India's existence as an Independent Republic.
Here are some facts about the Indian Constitution.
- A draft committee was appointed for drafting the Constitution of India with Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar as the chairman on 29th August 1947. The Drafting committee took less than six months to prepare its draft.
- M. N. Roy, an advocate of radical democracy, was put forth the idea for framing of Constitution of India for and according to Indians first in 1934.
- The draft of Constitution of India was submitted to the Indian Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. The draft was put up for debate and discussion, over 2000 amendments were made before it was finalized.
- The Constituent Assembly took almost three years to complete its historic task of drafting constitution of India.
- The Constitution of India was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26th November 1949.
- On January 24, 1950, each member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Constitution, signed two handwritten copies of the Constitution of India, one in Hindi and one in English, at the Constitution Hall, now known as the Central Hall of Parliament in New Delhi, India.
- Two days later on, January 26, 1950, the history was made, Constitution of India came into effect throughout the nation.
- The constituent assembly ceased to exist and became the Parliament of India under the transition provisions of the new Constitution.
- The original Constitution of India was handwritten by Prem Behari Narain Raizada.
- Each page of the Constitution of India is uniquely decorated by artists from Shantiniketan including Beohar Rammanohar Sinha and Nandlal Bose.
- The Constitution of India was published in Dehradun.
- The Constitution of India is the lengthiest written constitution in the World. In its current form, it has a preamble, 22 parts with 448 articles, 12 schedules, 5 appendices and 115 amendments.
- The Preamble of the Constitution of India begin with "We the People".
- The Indian Constitution is often called "a bag of borrowings". It has borrowed provisions from the Constitutions of other countries.
- The original copies of the Constitution of India written in Hindi and English, are kept in special helium-filled cases in the library of Parliament of India.
- There have been only 103 amendments to the Constitution of India, as of January 2019 since it was first enacted in 1950.
The Constitution of India is the supreme law of India. The Constitution of India is written instrument of basic principles and laws of a nation, state or social group that determine the powers and duties of the government and guarantee certain rights to the people in it.
